Fat Beagle Pottery was named in honor of Doc's very fat beagle, Sally, who supervised the shop for many years.
The shop is owned by Charles (Doc) Tostoe, the potter, his wife, Penny, and their son, Jon. Starting out as an
apprentice in the 70's and opening Fat Beagle Pottery shop in the 80's, Doc continues to grow through constant
research and desire to try new techniques. In over 20 years, he has become an accomplished potter who has exhibited
along the east coast from Rochester, NY, to Miami Beach, FL.
Fat Beagle specializes in a lovely assortment of functional stoneware and decorative, one of a kind pieces, gas
fired to 2400 degrees for durability and luster. Some of the shop's specialty glazes are:
*a toasty, tan clay body with a splash of multi-color glaze we call "Stoneku".
*an irredescent, blue textured mat glaze with a dry, coarse, feel.
*a beautiful, fluid ash glaze which reminds some folks of a deep, wooded forest.
*a more standard, functional pottery with one or two main colors.
From mixing clay and creating glazes, to turning and firing, each piece of the unique pottery is produced in the
shop in Seagrove. The lovely selections of functional and decorative stoneware are the rewards of over 20 years
of experience., For a unique shopping experience, come out to the rolling hills of the Piedmont and browse our
showroom. Restroom, picinic tables, and a country porch swing are available for your comfort. Tour buses and groups
are welcome!
