For those of you looking for a fun turning experience, consider a
Leach Style Treadle Wheel
.

I build a traditional wheel with good, solid materials at an affordable price.  The frame is treated pine; the treadle, connecting arm and seat are oak. All wood parts get three coats of polyurethane. The crankshaft is 1" steel and the turning head is 12" diameter steel with removable pins so you can turn on the bat or remove the pins and turn on the wheelhead. The shaft is riding on two sealed ball-bearings. The throw and elevation of the treadle are adjustable to any size user.

I also offer a hardware kit, for those wishing to do their own wood work. This includes, crankshaft,12" wheel head, bearings and the forged parts. All for $350 plus shipping and handling.

These wheels are priced at $700.00 (effective 5/11/06), FOB Greensboro, NC.  Six turning bats are also included. For further information, call or e-mail me.  Starting when I was about twelve I got the opportunity to tag along to a few workshops at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, NC.  I mostly just tried to stay out of the way of the paying students, but I did get a chance to learn to throw and to begin to understand the processes of clay. Six years later that experience helped me to get a job as a studio assistant at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC. There I began to take classes in clay and soon I realized that I had found what I was meant to do.
